Social Determinants of Health

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are conditions in the environments where people live, learn, work, and play that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality of life outcomes and risks. Healthy People 2030 has identified 5 social determinants of health:

Social Determinants of HealthExamples of social determinants include:

  • - Safe housing, transportation, and neighborhoods
  • - Education, job opportunities, and income
  • - Access to nutritious foods and physical activity opportunities
  • - Discrimination and violence
  • - Polluted air and water
  • - Language and literacy skills

By working to establish policies that positively influence social and economic conditions and those that support changes in individual behavior, we can improve health for large numbers of people in ways that can be sustained over time.

Improving the conditions in which we live, learn, work, and play and the quality of our relationships will not only improve individual and population health, society, and workforce, but also advance health equity.
